ANATOMY OF A ROTTEN AD CAMPAIGN
The film Once Bitten went through many advertising campaign ideas. This ought to give you an idea of how ludicrous the promotional process can get:
Teaser PosterThe original artwork featured Jim Carrey holding a pair of panties with a bat on them.
Fortunately it was Dave's name that was printed over the panties,
and not mine (let Dave's mom show her friends the ad and
say, "that's my son's name over the panties!").
Theatrical PosterBy the time of the theatrical release, the panties were fortunately gone. Jim now just pointed up at Lauren with a glowing finger (?). Karen Kopins, who scored well with preview audiences, was added to the poster.
Video PosterAs Jim Carrey became more popular, he was featured more prominently in the ads. I couldn't believe it - finally, an ad that made this look like a legitimate film! (So I could kid myself that it was).
MGM Video Re-ReleaseMGM introduced a new "classic" version of the video for the year 2000, but for some strange reason they decided to play down Jim Carrey. He's the number one film star in the world and yet they cram him down in the left-bottom corner!!!
I was sure that we'd never sell another copy...
Until...... A friend of mine was traveling through Germany, and happened to look into the window of a video store. The panties were back!!!
But, hey, I couldn't complain -- I don't know anybody in Germany, and at least they kept our names off of the panties this time...
